We travelled from Vienna to Brno for a week of meetings. These photos were taken over a week mostly of buildings and things.

Summer Sunset Brno Link
Couples cross the intersection in front of an Air Bank branch on Moravské náměstí. I was drawn to the light from the sunset visible along Moravské nám and how it illuminated the clouds as they appear to intersect the line of the upper edge of the building along Joštova. This was my first evening in Brno and we were settling into the timezone and being back in summer again.

A stylised statue of Jobst of Moravia stands allegorical guard over Moravian Square in central Brno. A young man rubs his eyes while holding his skateboard between his legs. Various stickers and graffiti cover the catenary wire support pole. In the background young people congregate around a central square, read their devices and generally hang out. If you zoom in there is a ladder visible through a window in a door.

Varied buildings, varied history at dawn Link
I was fascinated by the variation in buildings and their varied colours. This photo was taken in the blue light of morning and to my mind shows the complex history of this city. The older buildings with their classical adornments on the right standing opposite buildings with modern facades on the left.

Lidická and Koliště Link
This is a main intersection on the ring road in the centre of Brno. The Church of St Thomas is illuminated by the light of the sunrise, the tower catching it before the roofline below.
Founded in 1350 by John Henry, Margrave of Moravia and a brother of Emperor Charles IV, as the church of an Augustinian monastery. It was rebuilt in baroque form in the seventeenth century with ochre walls and a copper onion dome.
It is also the burial church of the Luxembourg margraves. John Henry lies here, and so does his son Jobst, whose statue stands a few photographs back on Moravské náměstí.

Českobratrský evangelický chrám Jana Amose Komenského Link
Known in Brno as the Červený kostel, the Red Church, for the bare brick it is built from and never rendered over.
Neo-gothic, raised in the 1860s to a design by Heinrich von Ferstel, who was also the architect of the Votivkirche in Vienna.
It belongs to the Czech Brethren and is named for Jan Amos Komenský, known in English as Comenius. He was the Moravian teacher and the last bishop of the Unity of the Brethren, driven out of the country in the Counter Reformation that followed the Battle of White Mountain. He died in exile in Amsterdam.

Katedrála svatých Petra a Pavla from a path at Hrad Špilberk Link
In the distance the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is illuminated by the sunrise, the path in the foreground is also lit and stands in contrast to the middle ground that is mostly in shadow. I like the early morning light as it provides an opportunity for varying contrasts.
