A woman paints beneath Bruncvík. The statue of Bruncvík by Ludvík Šimek (19.1.1837 – 25.1.1886). Bruncvík was a legendary Czech knight who is said to have won a magic sword and a loyal lion. It is his lion that you see on Bohemian heraldry. See https://www.muzeumkarlovamostu.cz/cz/karluv-most/sochy-na-moste/bruncvik Claude used to translate from Czech to English, summary my own.

svatý Jan Nepomucký (1345 - 1393). St. John of Nepomuk was thrown into the river by King Wenceslaus IV after a dispute. The legend is that John had received the Queen's confession and refused to divulge if she was being unfaithful. The legend suggests that Wenceslaus IV had him tortured for 48 hours before throwing him in the Vltava which dried up afterwards. Afterwards Wenceslaus left for his country estate and the Church had John buried in the cathedral while the king was out of town. I assume this act upset things further given that Wenceslaus wanted to absorb the revenue of the Benedictine abbey of Kladruby and John opposed it.

Pražský orloj. The Prague Astronomical Clock is mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall in the Old Town Square. This clock dates back to 1410 and was created by horologist Mikuláš of Kadaň who was the imperial clock maker and Jan Šindel who was professor of mathematics at Charles University (U of Prague). Some of the history gets a bit complicated because there is another story of a clockmaker called Jan Růže who was blinded on the order of the Prague Councillors. Upset at this he disabled the clock and it remained unrepairable for 100 years. In 2010 it celebrated its 600th anniversary and while no one was blinded the artist responsible for part of the restoration in 2018, apparently, "radically changed the appearance, ages, skin tone, dress and even genders of the figures" last illustrated by Mánes in 1866. A clock for modern times perhaps..

Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem. The Church of the Mother of God before Týn was built in 14th century and replaced another Gothic church built in 1256. When completed in 1450s a statue of King George of Poděbrady (king 1458–1471) was placed in the gable beneath a huge golden chalice. After the Battle of White Mountain (1620), a period of counter reformation saw the removal of sculptures of the heretic king and the chalice was melted down and used as a halo for a sculpture of the Virgin Mary. In the foreground is a Mariánský sloup (Marian column) which is a column with a statue of the Virgin Mary mounted on top. The original was raised in 1650 in thanks for the defence of Prague against the Swedes in 1648, sculpted by Johann Georg Bendl (1620 - 1680). It was pulled down in 1918, days after Czechoslovak independence, so the column standing here is a replica put up in 2020.

So after a quick wander around Old Town Prague we had to collect our luggage and start heading for Melbourne.

Letiště Václava Havla Praha. Václav Havel Airport Prague minus our plane for almost 2 hours. Guess who had to run almost the full length of terminal three at Heathrow 😜
